Local attractions Ueda Castle Sanada-shi Yakata - A fortified residence of the Sanada clan, main bastion of the Sanada clan until Sanada Masayuki moved their base to Ueda Castle in 1585. Anraku-ji in Bessho Onsen, Ueda has the only extant octagonal pagoda in Japan. The pagoda has been designated as National Treasure. Nagano

Nagano is a cultural hub, too. Its capital city, Nagano city, is home to Zenkō-ji, a Buddhist temple and pilgrimage destination dating back to the 7th century, and the Nagano Prefectural Art Museum is right around the corner.
Matsumoto

Matsumoto is a city located in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. Matsumoto Castle is one of five castles designated as ‘National Treasures of Japan’ and the oldest five-tiered, six-story castle tower remaining in Japan. Construction began in 1592 of the elegant black and white structure with its three turrets.
